THE PLACE TO ENJOY

WORLD CULTURAL HERITAGE HALLSTATT

Hardly any other town in Austria inspires people from all over the world as much as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hallstatt. The small town in the Salzkammergut is idyllically situated on the beautiful Lake Hallstatt and nestled close to a mountainside.

The scenic beauty and traditional appearance of the town contribute to its fascination just as much as its thousands of years of history. The early mining and trading of salt gave rise to a distinct culture in Hallstatt, which is now known in science as the “Hallstatt period” and dates from 800 to 450 BC.

Hallstatt is a great destination for a day trip. You can reach the village from our resort IMLAUER Hotel Schloss Pichlarn by car in approx. 50 minutes. The drive takes you past the Grimming and via Bad Mitterndorf, Bad Aussee and Obertraun. Several public parking spaces are available in front of the resort.

Fantastic views and insights

Discover the unique charm of Hallstatt on a stroll through the small town. The lovingly decorated houses, adorned with flowers in summer, and the historic market square invite you to linger. There are magnificent views of the landscape and the deep blue Lake Hallstatt everywhere.

If you want to find out more about the history of the town and the region, you should definitely visit the World Heritage Museum in the middle of the town. Here, historical objects and modern technology are used to shed light on several thousand years – from the beginnings of salt mining to present-day tourism.

On a boat trip on Lake Hallstatt, you can discover the beautiful landscape and the picturesque village from a completely new perspective. From May to October, excursion and round trip boats operate on the lake. If you prefer a more historical experience, choose one of the traditional “Fuhren” or “Plätten” (flat wooden ships), which were originally used to transport salt and other goods.

The mountain is calling

Be sure to visit the Salzberg, which not only offers magnificent views, but also a range of attractions. You can easily reach the Salzberg in just a few minutes by funicular.

The Hallstatt salt mine is considered to be the oldest in the world and is still in operation today. On a guided tour through the mine’s tunnels, you will learn more about the history, significance and mining of salt. A fascinating world and a unique experience not to be missed.

The Salzberg is also home to the Hallstatt Skywalk “World Heritage View”. Around 360 meters above the village, you “float” on a platform with a first-class view of the village, Lake Hallstatt and the mountain landscape of the Salzkammergut.

If you have enough time and are interested in history, you have the opportunity to visit a millennia-old burial ground or visit the archaeological excavations that take place in the summer months.

Attention: The attractions on the Salzberg and the ascent with the cable car are only possible until August 31, 2025. Extensive construction work will be carried out, which is expected to last until June 2026.
