We would like to introduce you to two Austrian wineries that we have recently added to our range.

Winery Tegernseerhof, Mittelbach family

The Tegernseerhof in the picturesque Wachau, one of Austria’s best-known wine-growing regions, can look back on a long tradition and history. The winery is currently run by Martin Mittelbach in the 5th generation. The winery is part of the “Vinea Wachau” association, which is committed to home-growing, top quality, natural wine production and strict self-monitoring.

The winery’s spectacular steep slopes – including famous vineyards such as Loibenberg, Steinertal and Höhereck – produce expressive wines with a deep character of origin. The focus is primarily on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, which are characterized by taut minerality, crystal-clear fruit and crystalline elegance.

The style is characterized by the cool climate of the Wachau, the barren primary rock soils and the meticulous work of winemaker Martin Mittelbach, who runs the winery with a keen sense and great care.

We recommend:

Grüner Veltliner Ried Höhereck Smaragd
Tegernseerhof – Loiben – Wachau
Vintage 2017, 2016 or 2010

The “Grüner Veltliner Ried Höhereck Smaragd” from the Tegernseerhof winery comes from a small vineyard on a south-eastern slope. The unmistakable mineral spiciness, smoky depth and fascinating complexity characterize this Grüner Veltliner full of character, which masterfully combines elegance and depth – ideal for lovers of expressive wines.

Nikolaihof Winery, Saahs family

The Nikolaihof Winery is also located in the Wachau and is a historical jewel of Austrian viticulture. With almost 2,000 years of history, it is considered the oldest winery in Austria and is one of the first wineries in the world to operate according to biodynamic Demeter guidelines.

The company switched to biodynamic viticulture back in the 1970s. No synthetic chemical sprays, herbicides or artificial fertilizers are used. Instead, natural preparations such as nettle manure, valerian and horsetail are used.

On 22 hectares of vineyards, Nikolaihof cultivates exclusively white grape varieties, including mainly Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. The wines are fermented spontaneously on their own yeast and mature in a historic wine cellar. A special highlight is the 350-year-old wooden wine press, which is considered to be the largest of its kind in the world and is still in operation.

The wines from Nikolaihof are puristic, profound and characterized by decades of biodynamic experience. They are characterized by fine aromas, natural elegance and exceptional ageing potential. They are among the quietest but most impressive voices of the Wachau – perhaps even of all biodynamic viticulture worldwide.

We recommend:

Riesling Ried Vom Stein Smaragd
Nikolaihof – Mautern – Wachau
Vintage 2013 or 2009

The “Riesling Ried Vom Stein Smaragd” from the Nikolaihof winery is a prime example of delicate elegance and timeless depth. Grown on primary rock soil and matured in wooden barrels, it is characterized by cool minerality and an almost floating lightness. Its precise structure and enormous ageing potential make it a Riesling for connoisseurs who appreciate subtlety and finesse – a quiet classic with great inner tension.
